hey are young adults who have been through a lot in their lives, but now, they’re working to help other children in foster care.
The Adoption Network Cleveland hosted an event Wednesday night at John F. Kennedy High School. They were trying to raise awareness and recruit foster and adoptive parents.
Representative Marcia Fudge, from Ohio’s 11th Congressional District, was on hand to learn more about the program. Several panelists spoke at the event, including young adults who used to be in the foster care system. One of the speakers, Kevinee Gilmore, went into foster care when she was just 13-years-old.
She lived in 13 different places until she left foster care when she was 18. Kevinee then says she attended college, not because people encouraged her to do so, but because she needed a place to live. But, when holiday breaks rolled around, she was homeless again. She either lived in her car or lied to get into shelters. Kevinee finally graduated from Cleveland State University last August with a degree in Social Work.
During her college career, she even interned in Senator John Kerry’s office. Kevinee is now hoping to turn her passion about foster care into a career.
