Being a Best Friends staff photographer since 2002 has given me the opportunity to capture a wide variety of subjects and events. I’ve photographed everything from rescue missions to simple photos for animal ID cards, wildlife, geology, people, pets, parades, parties, protests and more.
I enjoy all of my assignments but perhaps the most rewarding ones are the adoptions. While adoption events don’t hold the drama of rescue missions or the promise of splendid grandeur at a national park, they do exemplify a major aspect of what we do… finding new homes for unwanted pets. And I find that capturing the moment when people meet their new friend to be both personally and professionally gratifying.
I’m always amazed at the hard work our staff and volunteers put into these events. These people are good! And without them many pets would never find that new beginning. My admiration for the folks that put on our adoption events cannot be understated.
This slideshow includes photos from several Adoption events in 2007. I hope these images tell the story of what is possible when people work together to help animals.
Thanks for watching,
Clay Myers

Months and now years have gone by for many of these children, whose Adoptions are still not completed. Children have been taken in birthmother interviews away from their orphanages and foster families, orphanages have been raided, and time is passing. These photos are our photos of when we first “met” them and who they are today while we still wait.

Planned Parenthood Reports Zero Adoption Referrals for the fiscal year 2005-2006. During the 2005 to 2006 fiscal year, the nonprofit Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the nation’s largest abortion provider, performed a record 264,943 abortions, attained a high profit of $55.8 million and received record taxpayer funding of $305.3 million. Among these taxpayers were millions and millions of Americans who oppose abortion. During this time period, Planned Parenthood did not refer a single pregnant woman to adoption services. In fact, the word, “adoption”, did not even appear in the Planned Parenthood’s annual report. In the previous year, Planned Parenthood had reported 1,414 Adoption referrals, which amounts to one adoption for every 180 abortions. The fact that the organization chose not to release a number for adoptions in the 2005 to 2006 fiscal year means that one can only assume the number was so low that Planned Parenthood did not want to embarrass itself by revealing it. In fiscal year 2004, Planned Parenthood had reported that it referred nearly 1,500 clients to Adoption Agencies. So why the huge change when compared to zero referrals for 2005? It hurts Planned Parenthood’s profit margin to refer women for adoption services, but would it really be so awful of them to encourage women to at least consider adoption as an option for abortion. Planned Parenthood is not about saving babies or helping women. It is time for the people of the United States to insist that their members of Congress and their state legislators stop funding Planned Parenthood with taxpayer’s earnings.
