Russian Adoption

How long is the kitten adoption process from PetSmart?

I am considering adopting a kitten from Petsmart. How long does the application/ approval process take? I have no pets and have never personally had one (with the exception of the occasional goldfish and caring for my parent’s puppy). I have done extensive research on the breed I want, though ( Russian Blue). I am debating whether to go to a breeder or to adopt. I would prefer to adopt and take in a homeless cat, which is why I want to try adopting first.

I know that the kitten doesnt belong to PetSmart, that its from a local rescue group.

It depends on the specific rescue’s policy. They may require a 24 hour period to review your application, and contact your vet etc, or you may just need to fill out the paperwork and go. Try googling the rescue’s website and see what their protocol is.

  1. I adopted 2 cats, one from Petsmart 2 yrs ago, and another last week. Both times I was in long enough to fill out paper work and pretty much out the door we went.
    Enjoy your new pet!

  3. I almost adopted a little kitten from the PetSmart, but I waited too long, and someone else got her before I could.
Yes, you’re right, they come from local rescue groups who are usually there 2-3 times a week.
Definitely don’t buy from a breeder. That should never be an option.
With a breeder there are liability forms, and all those fine print shenanigans, and you don’t know what you’re getting. (Go ahead and search resolved questions for the buying from a cat breeder subject, you’ll know exactly why you shouldn’t)
And with the PetSmart adoption, the process takes about a few hours. You might need to submit your information first, which is no big deal, they just want to make sure that you’re not a known murderer or have a history of animal cruelty, and that you fit all the requirements to own and care for a pet. (i.e financially, lawfully, and things like how available you will be to the kitten, and how much time and effort you’re willing to put in.)

So to sum up the story:
NEVER BUY FROM A BREEDER, always adopt.
It doesn’t matter how much you want a Russian Blue. It won’t be as healthy, as cuddly, and as emotionally fulfilling as a loving rescue cat.
(Plus, in my opinion, the Russian Blues are really aggressive, and high maintenance, as they have such long, hard to manage fur.)

I was the same way as you. I didn’t have any pets besides fish my whole life, but when I wanted to get a cat, I didn’t even know about breeders, or shelters, or even different types of cat breeds. I adopted a little black short hair from my shelter, and I’m SO glad I did. I would never buy from a breeder.

If you do adopt a kitten from PetSmart, I’ll warn you now; If you’re anything like me, don’t go down the cat toy aisle! You’ll never come out, and you’ll go into fuzzy, squeaky, laser-pointer debt.
Good luck, and best wishes to you and your soon to be new kitten! =)

Worked at a humane society animal shelter for two years, trained with a veterinary doctor, and I have two kitties. It’s so hard to go into a shelter, and not want to take every single kitten home with you. =)

  4. It depends on the policies of the shelter that has the animals there – each is different. Just ask them what the process is. Some have shelter volunteers there during business hours that you can talk to, some just have pre-adoption questionnaires to fill out and someone will get back to you.

But why are you asking this? If they say it will take a half hour to fill out the application then they’ll let you know in a day or so if you’re approved would that be "too much time" for you? You sound very wishy-washy when it comes to what pet you want. And if it is a matter of calling you back you’ll probably have changed your mind by then. You said you wanted a dog, then a cat, then it has to be a Russian Blue, now it’s a cat from a shelter. Make up your mind. DON’T get a pet on impulse.

edit: Jen – you’re mistaken – the Russian Blue is a SHORTHAIRED breed.

  5. You do realize it is PetsMart and not Pet Smart, right?
