Foster Adoption

November 29, 2009

Is foster care or adoption done through the state or your county?

If it’s the county, can I go to the next county over, or does it have to be the one I reside in?

You must go through your own county to start the process. Once you are certified, you can apply for any child/children throughout your state and the nation. Often, with smaller areas, there are several counties that are coverend under the same branch. Also, while you can seek placements from outside of your jurisdiction, it is often more difficult to do, since many social workers are seeking to place their own children first and foremost. It is not impossible, but it is more difficult and will require you to be more proactive.

  1. it is done by province and interprovince in Canada. I am not sure if Canada adopts out of Canada.

  3. I was beat to the answer
YOu need to be certified to adopt through your county then once that is complete you can adopt in any county they send your home study to that county. Most states have kids on line that are available for adoption

  4. Foster care and adoption is done mamy ways. We personally had an adoption agency that worked with every county in our state. Therefore we had a larger range of available children. It doesnt matter which county you live in, you can adopt from any other county.

  5. I was a foster kid for 11 years and I moved around between 3 different counties in the state I grew up in.
The first county I started in was where I lived originally. I stayed in many houses in that county.
Then I was moved to another county to specifically goto a home where the foster parents wanted a young girl. I met with the foster parents before moving to county #2.
I stayed in about 4 different homes in county #2.
I was moved to county #3 because there was a group home for pre-teen/teen girls. And I also stayed with my final foster parents in county #3.

It is not unlikely that kids that are in the foster care system and "legally free" for adoption move around.
