Authors@Google: Jean Hanff Korelitz

Tags: , , , , , ,

The Authors@Google program welcomed Jean Hanff Korelitz to Google’s New York office to read from and discuss her book, “Admission”.

“‘The flight from Newark to Hartford,’ begins “Admission,” ‘took no more than fifty-eight minutes, but she still managed to get her heart broken three times.’ No lovesick youth, this is the voice of a college admissions officer at the center of this intricately plotted novel. While most Americans are preoccupied with tax season, millions of others carry another burden?college acceptance letters. (Fat or thin?) An engaging read, not yet another stereotypical look at crazed applicants, this novel provides distraction while awaiting the mail delivery. It allows students (and parents) to feel that the people making decisions are fallible humans, and it challenges readers to grasp the importance of what we admit to ourselves.”

His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama: Peace Through Compassion

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

In the remotest parts of Tibet, the American Himalayan Foundation has been working quietly as a lifeline for people who have no one else.

Over a dozen years AHF has built 33 schools where Tibetans learn in their own language, 24 bridges over dangerous rivers, and eight clean water systems for villages. They shelter elders whose poverty is shocking, support orphans, and build and maintain hospitals and clinics that care for thousands each year.

This year, AHF will help build two more schools with dorms and kitchens because nomad children live so widely scattered, a bridge that will free 3,000 villagers, and a clean water system so that 2,000 Tibetans wont have to spend hours gathering contaminated water from a river far away. Helping Tibetans has never been more urgent.

For more information about AHF and how you can help, please visit: http://himalayan-foundation.org

Justin Bieber’s L-O-V-E Story 31 part 3

Tags: , , , ,

Still the FLASHBACK, Justin’s POV:
But halted once they saw us, I know the reason why I had butterflies in my stomach now, I was afraid. Not of my mom but Shaelyn. I stared at outer space for a while but Mikaela coughed rather loudly to regain my attention. Weakly, I started speaking, “Hey guys, I want you to meet Mikaela Reed.” The room was silent, both were waiting for me to add a little more information on Mikaela and why we were holding hands. I started again, but much louder and confident this time, “She’s my girlfriend. She’s an upcoming new artist, The Dream’s protégé.” Both my mom and Shaelyn went, “Ohh, that’s why.” When they realized they had both said the same thing at the same time, they laughed. But not for long, Shaelyn and my mom both introduced themselves to Mikaela, and welcomed her. Telling Shaelyn Mikaela was my girlfriend was one of the hardest things I had ever had to do. I searched for any anger in Shaelyn’s face but was unsuccessful, she didn’t care. Oh wait, she did care but she was happy for me. She has neutral feelings for me; I’ll always be just her friend and boss.
END OF FLASHBACK

Justin’s POV:
I’ve been standing outside Shaelyn’s house for at least 5 minutes now and was literally melting. I put my pride to the side, and rang the doorbell.
Noone answered for quite a while, I looked at the driveway, no cars. That must have meant that no one was home, I turned around but just as I took the first step, someone had opened the door. I turned around once more and faced the door, instead of seeing Shaelyn. I saw nothing. Noone. Then I looked down, it was a little girl. What the frik? I thought this was Shaelyn’s house. She didn’t have a sister or brother or smaller siblings than her. “Yes, mister?” the little girl asked me sweetly. I smiled at the little girl, oh she was cute. Kid cute. She must have looked 5 or 6. “Sorry, I think I have the wrong-” I was interrupted by a familiar voice shouting from a distance, “Chloe, who’s at the door?” Relief swept through my body, “Shaelyn?” I whispered to myself, the little girl heard me. “SHAELYN!” she shouted, dang another little girl with a big voice. But she still looked cute. “There’s a boy at the door, and he looks very pretty.” Pretty? I am not pretty, I am handsome. But I was still flattered by her compliment.
Soon enough, Shaelyn walked towards the door, wearing a tank tap and shorts. My PA is mighty fine. Well, ex PA. “Oh.” I heard her/Shaelyn say.

FLASHBACK, the night Mikaela told Justin to let Shaelyn go:
Justin’s POV:
I had talked to my mom and she honestly disliked the idea. Disliked it? No, she absolutely hated it. I told her that it was my idea, since I didn’t want her to be angry at MY OWN girlfriend. We argued about it, but obviously I had won. It wasn’t much of a challenge for me.
My mom had left to do some ’shopping’, but I knew she wasn’t really. It was just one of the things she did when she was upset, shop ’til you drop. Of course, before I was famous, she was unable to do that, but she never was upset back then, I didn’t have a PA she literally loved like a daughter.
Mikaela had left so that I could get on with my business and what I mean by business is to fire Shaelyn. I had invited her to come round and obviously she was very confused, it was a Saturday night and it was her day off.
After 20 minutes of waiting, she had finally arrived, I made her sit down. It was quiet for a while but I spoke first, “Shaelyn…” This was going to hurt a lot, but if I was to keep Mikaela, I would have to Shaelyn go. Shaelyn sat with her ears wide open (not literally, lol) “It’s not that we don’t appreciate everything you’ve done for me and my mom but I think it’s time. That we let you go.” She didn’t speak for a while, I searched her face for any signs of anger, there were none. Her face was expressionless. ‘Oh’ was all she could manage to say before she left.
“You let her go that early, huh?” my mom asked me harshly, when she arrived back home. I nodded, and we spoke no more of it.

Yeah, too many flashbacks. I’m sorry. Comment comment :)

Kyoshi Neil Stolsmark does Ufutun-Bo at the 8th Annual Warrior Gasshuku

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Kyoshi Neil Stolsmark hosted the 8th Annual Warrior Gasshuku Karate and Kobudo training camp on June 11th – 14th, 2009 in beautiful southeastern Wisconsin, U.S.A.
Owner of Authentic Ancient Arts Karate and Kobudo School in Waukesha WI., Kyoshi Stolsmark once again assembled an unbelievable host of instructors from around the country. Hanshi Doug Perry, who just received a historic promotion to 9th dan made his fourth trip to our camp. Rounding out the headliners were Kyoshi Pat Haley, Kyoshi Jerry Taylor, Kyoshi CD Wiliamson, Sensei Blake Burgert, and Sensei Fred Lohse III.
Branch groups from Canada, New York, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin came together in this gorgeous setting, to refine their traditional Shorin-ryu Shorinkan karate-do and Okinawan kobudo skills and take a serious approach and attention to the detail that is evident in our collective student body. This year we had fifty students grade for different levels of Black Belt- 15 in Karate and an unprecedented 35 move up in Kobudo.
There are many hours of training scheduled during the four days and three nights of the Gasshuku. You may train as much as you like; train in what interests you. Take advantage of your time, bring an empty cup and experience the wealth of knowledge being shared by all of the teachers. Assistant instructors are there to help you! Free time is scheduled for you to review and meet the instructors personally. Ask questions, make friends, and enjoy yourself. The camp also features: hiking, swimming (supervised by a lifeguard only), fishing, boats (for rent), basketball courts, mini golf, a castle to explore, and plenty of wide open space for training. If you are the rugged type, a tenting area is also available; you will need to bring your own tent. Families are welcome to enjoy a fabulous weekend of Budo.
Ichariba Choodee. An Okinawan proverb that means Once we meet and talk, we are brothers and sisters.
More videos of the Gasshuku to come!
