Do regular adoption agencies let you adopt abused children?

I am so shocked. I just heard about Baby P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa5-B6Y0Tj0&feature=related

I want to help abused children to keep stuff like that from happening to these poor children. Do regular Adoption Agencies let you do that, or what would you have to do? Thanks!

Hello. First, good for you for wanting to helps some kids. Honestly, I could not even read the story, because I have heard it before…..

Second, abused and neglected children are removed from their parents and become part of the foster care system. Approximately 70% of kids in the foster care system were abused.
Overall, 50-60% of kids in foster care will be re-united with their biological families. 10% go into kinship care. That leaves 20-30% of kids who become legally free for Adoption and NEED HOMES. (Approximately 150,000 in the US)

Third, adopting children that have been abused is not easy. You have to remember that these children are products of their early experiences. Many of them have attachment disorders, PTSD, don’t trust anyone, and are scared beyond belief. But, with time, patience, understanding, caring, and therapy, abused children will eventually learn to trust. It is hard work, but 100% worth it, because you are truly helping a child.

If you decide that adopting from foster care may be too difficult for you, there are OTHER WAYS to help abused and neglected children:

1) Volunteer at a group home/orphange and spend time with the kids by playing or reading to them. Or do clerical work at the home.

2) Become a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate). This is a volunteer position, but you are appointed by the Family Courts. As a CASA your job is to speak up for a abused child and get them everything they deserve and need.

3) Donate items or money. Foster kids usually have nothing. They literally can carry "their items" in a trash bag.

4) Become a Big Brother/Big Sister. There is a LONG waiting list in most states for kids who want a mentor.

5) BECOME INVOLVED IN FOSTER CARE REFORM. The system is a mess, children die and are abused further, children move homes over and over again, children age-out with nothing, ONLY 10% of foster kids ever goto college and <3% graduate. Most foster kids experience homeless sometime when they get out of the system. Get involved!

Hope this helps…..

ETA:
6) Become involved in prison reform. Many abusers spend no time in prison or are parolled before serving their entire sentence. The recidivism rate is above 85% for sexual offenders. They can not be helped, but yet our prison system lets them out to roam the streets and offend again. In many states, child abuse may not even be a felony.
Child Abuse should be MADE A FELONY "A" CRIME with no-parole option.

What are some adoption agencies in haiti?

I was searching online for the different adoption agencies in haiti and I can’t seem to find a directory or anything similar. I know it is possible to adopt through agencies that are located outside of haiti (like in the US and Canada), but I was more curious about Adoption Agencies in the country of haiti. Do you know where I could find a list of haiti-based adoption agencies??

You couldn’t find a list because Haiti doesn’t have any Adoption agencies. Adoptions are handled by the government and some (not all) orphanages.

At the moment, adoption from Haiti is not possible unless you have already completed the approval process. First priority is disaster relief and reuniting families who have been separated. New adoptions will not be possible until the country has stabilized, the missing have been located or confirmed dead, and they have identified the actual orphans versus the children who are lost from living relatives.

Why not look into adoption locally? There are over 120,000 children in US foster care who actually do need permanent homes as soon as possible.

If it’s illegal to sell children, how do adoption agencies get away with doing just that?

It’s illegal for people to sell their children to one another – a law I think we probably need to keep – so why are Adoption Agencies allowed to charge prospective parents more than the procedural costs? In doing so, they’re making a profit off of the transfer of a child from one family to another, which is the same thing as selling them. Shouldn’t Adoption agencies be run by the government or forced to become non-profit organizations?

Some lobbyists, Adoptive parents, representatives, religious groups…etc…have legitimized it and pow! It’s a business.

Very little in Canada resembles the adoption circus industry in the US and I believe the UK and Australia can say the same.

So…I think it sucks and turns children into a commodity that can be priced according to colour for example…you know…clearance sales.

Even non-profit agencies profit on some level.

I have learned so much over the last months…and that is one thing I cannot support in any way. It is selling children.

What adoption agencies did George Tiller refer to?

I DO NOT WANT AN ABORTION MORALITY DEBATE! I’VE HEARD ANYTHING YOU COULD POSSIBLY SAY.

For the purpose of research, I was wondering if anyone knew what Adoption agency or agencies the late Dr Tiller referred to (I know he tended to use one specific one.)
Protest? I volunteer for Planned Parenthood sweetheart.

What if there were NO adoption agencies?

If adoption agencies were all closed TODAY, how do you think that would affect the Adoption process as it stands currently?

If there was no one proffiting upon adoption, like Heather said, adoption would simply be a social service for children with no families.

I also think if there were no Adoption Agencies in place there might be more focus on WHY children get placed for adoption in a lot of the foreign countries where there is heavy IA. In order to really make a difference and change things for the kids we have to take a good hard look at the WHYs of the situation and fix those things. Maybe more women and children geared social welfare programs in these countries, work on lessening the social stigma attached to single parenthood, and better sex ed/easier access to birth control.

In order to really affect the system you have to look at the WHY and keep women from having to come to a place where they have to make that decision not to parent.

Planned Parenthood Reports Zero Adoption Referrals for 2005 Pro-Life Anti-Abortion Video PSA

Planned Parenthood Reports Zero Adoption Referrals for the fiscal year 2005-2006. During the 2005 to 2006 fiscal year, the nonprofit Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the nation’s largest abortion provider, performed a record 264,943 abortions, attained a high profit of $55.8 million and received record taxpayer funding of $305.3 million. Among these taxpayers were millions and millions of Americans who oppose abortion. During this time period, Planned Parenthood did not refer a single pregnant woman to adoption services. In fact, the word, “adoption”, did not even appear in the Planned Parenthood’s annual report. In the previous year, Planned Parenthood had reported 1,414 Adoption referrals, which amounts to one adoption for every 180 abortions. The fact that the organization chose not to release a number for adoptions in the 2005 to 2006 fiscal year means that one can only assume the number was so low that Planned Parenthood did not want to embarrass itself by revealing it. In fiscal year 2004, Planned Parenthood had reported that it referred nearly 1,500 clients to Adoption Agencies. So why the huge change when compared to zero referrals for 2005? It hurts Planned Parenthood’s profit margin to refer women for adoption services, but would it really be so awful of them to encourage women to at least consider adoption as an option for abortion. Planned Parenthood is not about saving babies or helping women. It is time for the people of the United States to insist that their members of Congress and their state legislators stop funding Planned Parenthood with taxpayer’s earnings. Want to become social worker for adoption agencies. What do i study?

So i have finally found what i want in life and what i love to do which is help kids, teens and young adults. I have always wanted to work for an Adoption agency so should I study psychology or sociology? Help!
I DON’T want to separate kids from their parents. I wanted to work for an adoption agency to give them homes and interview the parents. Sorry if I confused anyone in my wording.

I have a Bachelors in Social Work with a minor in sociology and work in a public agency, finding families for children who have a goal of adoption. I work with foster children.

You could go for a Bachelors in social work. Make sure the college/university social work program is accredited by the CSWE otherwise pursuing an MSW would be fruitless.

Some of my professors had Bachelor degrees in other human resource related fields and then Masters/Doctors in social work.

Find a college that has a social work program and call the department chair or adviser. Ask lots of questions……

Also, if you are finding homes for children then you are working with children who have been separated from their parents…..for whatever reason. Be it by the parents own will, or by acts that involved the public child welfare system….

A degree in psychology will introduce you to a different "thought" or model than a social work degree; more of a medical model. Sociology would be good….
