Our Foster Adoption Journey – Step 1: Getting The Facts + Going To An Informational Meeting

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

http://www.faintstarlite.com/2010/04/our-foster-Adoption-journey-step-1-getting-the-facts-going-to-an-informational-meeting/ We get a lot of questions so we decided to share our Foster Adoption journey and provide basic information for families interested in learning more about adopting through foster care. Keep in mind, each state has its own rules so the info I share is specific to adopting in Wisconsin… although there is a lot of cross-over in most states.

Where are we currently at in the process? As of this video’s posting date we’re just finalizing our home study and will be eligible for placement next month.

Thanks to Johnson & Johnson’s Health Channel for sponsoring this video series! I met the director of their channel at a conference awhile back and I ended up telling him about our adoption plans. I reached out to him after deciding to make a series of videos + posts on the topic and J&J said they’d be happy to sponsor it.

If you’re looking for more resources on American adoption or about foster care, a great resource is AdoptUsKids.org – they have photolistings, adoption stories, and details about contacting your state’s adoption resource center.

International Adoption

Is there any international adoption agencies that work with older parents?

On every site I look the age limits are different for Kazakhstan! And I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on agencies.

The requirements for international Adoption are set by the country in question. This includes things like age, marital status, infertility, number of children in the family, sexual orientation, etc etc etc.

That said, agencies can also set their own requirements as long as it doesn’t conflict with those of the country.

Example: Country A might require adoptive parents to be between the ages of 25-50. But the agency might say that they will only work with couples over the age of 30.

Check the US state department website for Kazakhstan’s requirements. It states the parents must be no older than 60.

Adoption

How to find avaible cats for adoption in UK?

Maybe it’s just me but I’m just not typing in the right things to see cats for sale/Adoption! Could anyone please give me some good websites?
We have tried shelters already, this is just for extra research, thank you so much!

The Blue Cross website (just type in Blue Cross) has everything you need on it, including your local animal rescue centre and all the cats available for adoption.

Please please please consider taking an older cat as they stay with us for so long.

Thank you.

Step Parent Adoption

Step Parent Adoption?

I have a 12 year old son my husband and I are going through the process of Step Parent Adoption. Can we get adoption assistance of any kind, during and after the process?

I don’t believe that you qualify for assistance from any government agency as this child is the natural child of your husband. However, I know a lot of attorneys donate pro bono time for Adoption matters, especially in situations where it will be straight forward (like yours). The only way to find out if that is possible is to call an attorney and ask. You can also ask if he can do it on a flat fee, which could save you some money.

Good Parenting

What are some good parenting forums?

I’m not asking anything on yahoo answers that has to do with parenting. It’s because a bunch of people on here instead of answering your question have to go all out and post a bunch of crap and give you this big lecture I’m really sick of it. From now on I’m only asking questions about pets.

For example of what I’m talking about go here
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmDD1J8e8TN6Bnweq5mHSzvsy6IX?qid=20070308164359AAc5v0W

There are always people just trynna tell you what you should or shouldnt do which is not what you asked them squiddy, amberwavess etc so I don’t want to deal with it. What are some good Parenting forums well you can chat with other parents and DON’T have to deal with all that?

Christian Adoption

Home-schooling an adopted child – father is a teacher – any advice? Christian point of view important.?

I am really keen to homeschool both my children. My daughter is 3 and my son is 1 but I am trying to research as much as possible now before we start. I have a problem in that their father is will be graduating as a teacher the year my daughter begins school. Our daughter is adopted from Ethiopia and our son is biological.
I originally considered h’schooling because I know that boys benefit more from beginning formal schooling when they are a little older. After some research, I now want to homeschool both to help provide strong moral (Christian) grounding for both children.
My husband’s family are very anti-homeschooling giving the reason that although the children might be ahead academically, they miss out socially. What has other people’s experiences been.
I was unsure as to whether to post on Adoption forum, but hoping to get some advice from parents who have adopted and are homeschooling on this forum.
Is h/schooling the wrong decision because of my husband’s career choice?

Interestingly, I know many school teachers families that homeschool. They know what the schools are like and don’t want their children in that situation. So his career is not a deciding factor.

"Socially", the majority of homeschoolers are actually more social than traditional school students due to their interaction with people of various ages and diverse nature (in the REAL world, not the artificial segregated peer age groups at school). I do believe that children educated at home get a wider range of experiences and benefit from that exposure to the world. I doubt that you would isolate your children and would make every effort to get them out and active if you decided to homeschool. So that pretty much eliminates the "Socialization" argument (that is really an myth that has been ‘busted’ over and over again.)

As for the "family members are anti-homeschool". Honestly, it isn’t their decision to make. This is a decision between you and your husband deciding what is best for your children. You really do need to honestly discuss this with him asking him to consider all educational options. There is plenty of time to make this decision and it doesn’t have to be made immediately. Meet with other homeschoolers in your area.. research the activities, support groups and services in your area. Most of all… Pray..

Russian Adoption

What are your views on interracial/international adoption?

I’ve already asked this in the Adoption section but I thought that I would ask it here too, with added detail.

What are your views on interracial/International Adoption?
As in white people adopting black babies, asian babies, etc. Black people adopting white babies, Asian babies, etc. A person of one nationality adopting someone of another nationality, etc.

Do you worry at all about the complications of taking someone out of their their racial/national heritage or culture or community?

It goes beyond the color issue, though that would be where more significant and visual issues would arise. What about an person/couple adopting a child from another country or continent even where there is potentially a different heritage/background and how would that affect the whole process?

I ask this as I am reading "White Teeth" which deals heavily with identity and how a person finds/shapes/comes to terms with that identity, especially when one is obviously different from one’s peers.

I’ve also overheard someone talking about the strange looks (on both sides, white and black) his family would get because they look white with an adopted black child.

I’ve also seen questions regarding whether a seemingly "white" name might cause a black/mixed child to become alienated within the black community.

(also on the margins of the issue is the recent events involving an American couple adopting a Russian child, but this is only marginally relevant if even at all, I only know the basic facts and question whether I should include it at all, but what the hay)

SO, how do you feel/think about the matter?

If the african child come from a poor country, then he will have a better future in the white kid’s country. But the problem is he will not know his heirtage/ people and may feel his whole life like a stranger and his white parents can give him only their culture. The same problem with asian kids!
